Mario Draghi’s recent report on The Future of European Competitiveness underscores the pressing need for reform across Europe. Without swift action, Europe risks falling behind globally, jeopardising its future growth. The message is clear: reform is crucial to keep Europe competitive on the world stage.
What implications does this hold for Europe’s small- and medium-sized accountancy practices (SMPs)? What role can they play in enhancing Europe’s competitiveness, particularly by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups? And how might SMPs evolve to meet this need effectively? This article explores how SMPs can transform to better support SMEs—a manifesto for making Europe’s SMPs more competitive, with lessons that apply globally.
What steps must SMPs take to fulfil this role?
The European Federation of Accountants and Auditors for SMEs (EFAA for SMEs) recognises SMEs as crucial to Europe’s sustainable transition and overall competitiveness. Equally, we see SMPs as essential for enabling SMEs to contribute effectively to this transition. In essence, SMPs act as key enablers for SMEs. Our European Parliamentary Election 2024 Manifesto, outlining the top 5 priorities for SMPs, emphasises that SMPs are vital partners for SMEs, supporting them in building financial resilience, adopting new technologies, and integrating sustainable practices.
SMPs, like their SME clients, face the same technological and digital transformations and need to remain competitive. This shared experience gives SMPs valuable insights they can pass on to SMEs. Offering tailored services to clients ranging from micro enterprises to complex medium-sized businesses, SMPs are uniquely suited to SMEs’ specific needs and leverage insights gathered from diverse clients. Furthermore, as SMEs themselves within the accountancy sector, SMPs understand and communicate in terms SMEs can easily relate to.
What does this transformation entail?
The transformation encompasses what we call the “Four Ps of Practice Transformation”:
1. Posture – Embrace Change
“Posture” here means attitude, mindset, and culture. With rapid, fundamental shifts in the world, SMPs must accept that change is the only constant and embrace it. Leaders in SMPs must be agile and prepared to adapt as regulations, market demands, the economic landscape, and technologies evolve.
2. People – Attract, Retain, and Nurture Talent
People are the core of any knowledge-based business, especially accountancy. SMPs are in a competitive talent market, particularly in Europe and North America, vying with industries like tech to attract skilled professionals. It’s not just about attracting more people but the right people with technical expertise in sustainability, AI, and ‘soft’ skills like leadership. EFAA’s May 2024 report, Building a Strong Brand Identity for Small- and Medium-Sized Accountancy Practices, highlights the importance of a strong brand to make SMPs attractive workplaces.
3. Product – Expand Service Offerings
SMPs’ services are shifting, especially with a rise in advisory services as SMEs seek strategies for competitiveness. SMPs, with their own SME insights, are well-positioned to advise on strategy, operations, and sustainability. With an exponential demand for sustainability services, EFAA’s Call to Action: SMPs Supporting Creation of the Sustainable Economy shows that SMPs have significant opportunities to support SMEs in sustainable practices, though capacity building will be crucial to meet these demands.
4. Processes – Modify Ways of Working
Efficiency, effectiveness, and economy are key. SMPs must stay alert to technological advancements, many of which they’ve already embraced to streamline traditional accounting tasks and become strategic advisors. AI is a current focus, and EFAA’s June 2024 webinar, How Accountants Can Appropriately Rely on AI, provides guidance. Moreover, SMPs benefit from embedding sustainable practices within their own operations, which enhances their credibility and insight when advising SME clients.
