The government has announced prompt action by the Trade Remedies Authority, the organisation responsible for protecting the United Kingdom from unfair practices in international trade.
The Chancellor also revealed plans to examine the current customs rules for Low Value Imports. At present, items worth one hundred thirty five pounds or less can enter the country without customs charges. Leading British retailers such as Next and Sainsburys have raised concerns, saying this allows foreign sellers to offer lower prices, putting them at a disadvantage.
During her speech in Washington D C at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund, Chancellor Reeves stressed that maintaining an open and global economy is essential for economic progress in the United Kingdom. This is the main aim of the government’s Plan for Change.
She stated that open trade brings benefits to the country, but greater fairness must be built into the global economic system. She also highlighted that the benefits of worldwide economic growth have not been shared evenly, either within the United Kingdom or abroad. Stronger measures are needed to address unfair practices that reduce income for working people.
